Microhollow cathode discharges

چکیده
By reducing the dimensions of hollow cathodes into the hundred micrometer range, stable, direct current, high ~atmospheric! pressure glow discharges in rare gases, rare gas–halide mixtures and in air could be generated. The electron energy distribution in these microdischarges is non-Maxwellian, with a pronounced high-energy tail. The high electron energy together with the high gas density, which favors three-body collisions, is the reason for an efficient excimer generation in these microplasmas. Excimer efficiencies from 1% to 9% have been measured for argon, xenon, argon fluoride, and xenon chloride direct current excimer emitters, with a radiant excimer emittance of up to 2 W/cm for xenon. Adding small amounts of oxygen to argon has allowed us to generate vacuum ultraviolet line radiation at 130.5 nm with an efficiency approaching 1%. Pulsing xenon discharges with nanosecond electrical pulses has led to an increase in intensity to 15 W/cm and to a simultaneous increase in efficiency to more than 20%. Operating the discharges in an abnormal glow mode has allowed us to generate microdischarge arrays without individual ballast. Applications of these plasma arrays are excimer lamps and plasma reactors. © 2003 American Vacuum Society. @DOI: 10.1116/1.1565154#

Characterization of microhollow cathode discharges
This work is devoted to the study of the electrical characteristics of microhollow cathode discharges (MHCD) at moderate to high pressure in argon and air for different geometries. High-pressure glow discharges can be operated in MHCD devices with μm electrode spacing. Experiments have been performed to determine the so-called Paschen curves, i.e. the dependence of the breakdown voltage on the ...

During the last decade a number of microcavity plasma devices have been developed. Examples are microhollow cathode (MHC) discharges and cathode boundary layer (CBL) discharges proposed by Schoenbach, capillary plasma electrode (CPE) discharges proposed by Kunhardt and Becker, and micro-structured electrode arrays (MSEs) introduced by Gericke and Penache. Arrays of microplasmas based on silicon...
متن کاملElectron Temperature and Density Measurement of Cylindrical Parallel MCS Discharge Plasma in Atmosphericpressure
We propose a cylindrical parallel microhollow cathode sustained (MCS) discharge plasma as a new large-area plasma source at atmospheric pressure. We measured the electron temperature and the density of this plasma source by using a Langmuir probe method and spectroscopy. The electron temperature at r=R/2 was measured to be 0.18 eV by using the Boltzmann plot method under the conditions that the...
متن کاملHollow Cathode Discharges - Analytical Applications
The low pressure glow discharges considered in this paper are the hollow cathode (Paschen), and the flat cathode (Grimm). Both discharges have similar voltage—current characteristics which are responsible for their radiation stability. The analytical sample is supplied to the discharge through a sputtering mechanism which provides a stable and non-selective source of particles. Some of the fund...
